Difference between Linux and Windows Server

Here I am going to list out some major difference between the Linux and Windows Server were given:

Linux is a Unix-like and POSIX-compliant computer operating system assembled under the free open source software development and distribution. The Linux kernel, an operation system kernel is the defining component of Linux.

Microsoft windows is a series of graphical interface operating systems developed, marketed and sold by Microsoft.

Microsoft introduced windows on 20^th November, 1985 as a graphical operating system shell for MS-DOS.

1.  Full access vs. no access:

Having the access of source code is the major difference between the Linux and Windows server. Linux belongs to the GNU public License which ensures that the users can access the full code and can do alteration in it to the very kernel that serves as the foundation of Operation System.

Some people say giving full access of code to public can let to the malicious effects on code and it will become the weakness of developers. Other people say, giving full access can bring faster improvements and fix bug also.

But in case of Windows, public cannot access the code and there would be no malicious effects on the code.

2. Development, Distribution & Manufacturer:

Linux is Open source development which is developed through sharing and collaboration of codes and features through forums etc. and then it is distributed in different vendors.

As Linux kernel is developed by the community.

Where Windows is developed and manufactured by Microsoft.

3. Threat detection and solution:

Removing bugs or error is easy in Linux, as it is open source so when any user post any kind of threat, many developers start working on it from the different parts of the world, immediately. Therefore, it is easy and fast to remove the threat from Linux.

Whenever threats detect in Windows, the Microsoft releases a patch that can fix the error or problem in 2/3^rd months or less than it. Sometimes all the errors fix early, Microsoft releases patches and updates it weekly.

4. Command line vs no command line:

No matter from where the Linux operating system has come and how amazing it is, one thing which no can forget is the command line will always remain an individual tool. No one can imagine using the Linux without the command line.

Windows also have command line tools but not that much beautiful like Linux. Microsoft have a command prompt for users. Without going to Run and entering the cmd, the user won’t be able to know that command-line tool exists.

And if the user have no idea about the command line of windows is, then how it is useful? 

5. User experience & Graphics performance:

In Linux there are many GUI applications, most of the work is done through terminal (A console window), if by chance a problem raise, then GUI usually can’t fix it. In Windows, everything is controlled by GUI and fortunately the problems are rare or less.

Linux contains hardware manufactures like NVidia, which do not provide the documentation for Linux developers, drivers won`t be able to use the full graphics card performance. Windows is combined with the newest DirectX versions and support full card graphics performance.

6. Default user interface, Source and update method:

Linux default user interface is depends on distro i.e. Gnome OR KDE, in windows the default user interface is graphical (Windows Aero).

Linus source model is basic terminal (CLI), in windows the source model is MS-DOS

All the updates done in Linux by many methods because it is opens source, while in windows all updates done by Microsoft only.

7. Gaming and examples:

In linux, few games are available. Some games are played through Wine, but not all features are available. But In windows, almost all games are available. Some CPU intensive and graphics intensive are exclusive to Windows PC`s.

Examples of Linux: Ubunto, Red Hat, Fedora, Debian, Archlinux, Android, Peach, OSI etc.

Windows: Windows 10, 8, 8.1, 7, vista, XP

8. File Supporting System and Cost:

Linux supports: Ext2, Ext3, Ext 4, Ifs, ReiserFS, Xfs, BTRFS, FAT, FAT32, NTFS.

Windows supports: FAT 32, NTFS, exFAT.

Cost for Linux: Linux can be distributed & downloaded freely through magazines, Books etc. Prices are available for Linux versions, but obviously they are cheaper than Windows.

Cost for Windows:  Price for windows is $119-$199.99, $69 for students, $99 to upgrade to pro.

9. Security:

 Linux version Peach has more than 70-100 virus listed till date. But none of them are spreading nowadays.

According to Dr.Nic Peeling and Dr. Juilan Satchells “Analysis of the Impact of Open Source Software” there are more than 60,000 viruses in Windows. And anti-virus cost you about $50 to $ 500 as an annually fee for security or protection.

10. Usage:

Linux can be installed on a wide variety because it is open source, its usage in in computer hardware, ranging from netbooks, mobile phones, tablet computers and video games consoles, to mainframes and super computers.

Windows is used in PC`s desktops, laptops, servers, and some phones.
